On Friday 5 September, St Benedict’s welcomed back our recent leavers and their families for the annual Upper School and Leavers’ Prizegiving. The evening marked the start of the academic year with warmth, optimism, and a true sense of community.
We were delighted to welcome back guest of honour, Siofra Boyle (OP 2016), who joined St Benedict’s in Year 7 and served as Head Girl in 2015–16. Now Vendor Manager at Amazon Fashion, Siofra was recently named in Drapers “30 Under 30” list, recognising her as one of the UK’s brightest young talents in the fashion industry.
The celebration began with a drinks reception in the Atrium, where students, staff, and families gathered to reconnect. The formal ceremony followed at Ealing Abbey, with Head Girl, Maria S and Head Boy, Alfie S offering thoughtful words of welcome and prayer. A moving flute performance by Upper Sixth student, Evie S also added to the sense of occasion.
Prizes were awarded to students in Upper Fifth and Lower Sixth for academic excellence, leadership, and contribution to school life. Deputy Chair of Governors and former St Benedict's pupil, Alex Avella, and Headmaster, Joe Smith both congratulated students on their achievements, including this year’s excellent GCSE and A level results.
Addressing the leavers, Mr Smith said:
"To all the Class of 2025: congratulations on your achievements and thank you for your contributions to the school. Whether or not you have won a prize this evening, you are, as Shakespeare puts it, ‘precious winners all.’"
Guest speaker Siofra shared insights from her own journey, encouraging students to approach the future with resilience and curiosity:
“Some of the best opportunities come from unexpected turns. Don’t be afraid to explore or change direction. Failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s part of it.”
She urged students to stay connected with their friends and with St Benedict’s:
"Take risks. Be kind to yourselves and others. Stay curious. And don’t forget to keep in touch—these friendships will remain some of the most important in your life.”
The evening concluded with every member of the Class of 2025 receiving a parting gift from Director of Sixth Form, Alex Heald, alongside a number of students receiving special awards for outstanding achievement.
This joyful celebration was a fitting occasion that celebrated both achievement and new beginnings. As our leavers take their next steps to university and beyond, we wish them every success and look forward to hearing of their future accomplishments.
