Train to Teach With Us

St Benedict’s School is a strategic partner within the West London Teaching Training Alliance (WLTTA). St Benedict's is offering teacher training positions for the academic year 2024/25 in the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Geography, History, Computing, Mathematics, Modern Languages & Cultures, PE and RE. All these subjects follow the PGCE course provided by St Mary's University or Roehampton University, both esteemed for their high-quality teacher training programmes.

As a leading West London independent day school, there are many benefits to training at St Benedict's, including small class sizes, professional mentoring and varying CPD opportunities. The programme is unsalaried but will lead to the award of PGCE with the potential for 60 credits towards a Master's degree and Qualified Teacher Status.

The Initial Teacher Training section of the WLTTA website lists all available teacher training programmes including those at St Benedict’s School.  Any queries regarding these programmes should be sent to: pcurrey@sacredh.lbhf.sch.uk

What made you want to become a teacher?

I loved studying Maths, both at school and university, and after a long career in the City then caring full-time for my young children, I decided that teaching Maths, something I had been considering for a long while, was the next step I wanted to take. As the daughter and granddaughter of teachers, you could say I have inherited the teaching bug and, now in the final stages of my Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course at St Benedict's, I can honestly say it's one of the best career decisions I have ever made.

Has the Initial Teacher Training programme at St Benedict’s met your expectations?

The ITT programme at St Benedict's has surpassed my expectations. Becoming a trainee teacher is not for the faint-hearted, it combines an intensive university and teaching schedule, but throughout it, my Mentor, PCM and the wider Maths department have been incredibly supportive, inclusive and helpful every step of the way.  I have been offered excellent opportunities to observe expert colleagues, benefit from rich CPD sessions and, perhaps most importantly, spread my wings and develop my own teaching practice within a wonderfully warm and welcoming school.

What has been your favourite memory from your time at St Benedict’s so far?

The children. It has been a privilege to be involved in their learning journey and to watch them mature and grow as young people and to think that in some way I have contributed to this.

What advice would you give to anyone considering taking up the programme?

Do it!  But be prepared to work hard.  Whilst you should not underestimate the time and energy the programme will require of you, if you are committed and passionate about teaching, then the rewards are immeasurably greater than any sacrifices made along the way.  My ITT experience at St Benedict's has been amazing, and I cannot wait for my new teaching career to begin!

Has the Initial Teacher Training programme at St Benedict’s met your expectations?

I have been exceptionally impressed by the initial teaching training programme at St Benedict’s. I have felt so supported, not just by my amazing mentor and PCM, but the rest of the staff who have made me feel very welcome.

My mentor has been invaluable in my training and has taught me so much. In my time here I have gained so much confidence, and have had many opportunities to contribute to the curriculum, activities outside the classroom and the pastoral side of the school.

I feel very well-prepared for the next year ahead as an Early Teacher Career (ETC), which I could not have done without the amazing help and support I had here. I really did look forward to coming in every day, and I am so glad that I made the choice to train here.
