We were delighted to welcome Dr Simon Hyde, CEO of HMC (The Heads' Conference), to St Benedict’s on Tuesday 18 November.
HMC represents more than 300 leading independent schools in the UK and internationally, providing member schools with sector-leading professional development, national advocacy and shared best practice — all of which directly enrich the education and opportunities we offer at St Benedict’s.
During his visit, Dr Hyde met with Headmaster Joe Smith and Rob Simmons, Headmaster of the Junior School, before touring both the Junior and Senior Schools. The visit provided an opportunity to see everyday school life and to discuss the realities, joys and occasional challenges of running a high-performing independent school. Dr Hyde also spent time with members of the Senior Leadership Team exploring school development, innovation and the value of belonging to a strong professional community.

HMC visits ensure the association maintains a close understanding of the priorities and context of its member schools. For St Benedict’s, the visit offered space for thoughtful professional dialogue and reaffirmed the importance of shared expertise, collaboration and the ongoing pursuit of high educational standards.

Headmaster Joe Smith commented:
It was wonderful to welcome Simon to St Benedict’s. His visit highlighted the importance of belonging to an international network of schools that shares ideas, challenges thinking and champions the highest standards. HMC membership ensures our staff continue to benefit from the best professional development and support, and ultimately that our students enjoy an education shaped by the very best practice in the sector.
Joe Smith, Headmaster
We are grateful to Dr Hyde for his visit and look forward to continuing to strengthen our close relationship with HMC.
