Sixth Form Student Izzy Signs Football Scholarship with American University
We are delighted to share that Sixth Form student Izzy M has secured a football scholarship to Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) in Alabama, USA, where she will combine her university studies with competing in collegiate football.
AUM competes at a highly competitive level of American university sport, regularly challenging for conference and national honours. Izzy's achievement marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first female student from St Benedict's to earn a football scholarship to an American university.
Izzy's football journey began at the age of eight when she joined local club Actonians, where she first developed her passion for the game. Her talent quickly became evident and she progressed through the player development programmes at Chelsea and Arsenal before representing QPR Women at Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 levels. During this time, she also earned selection for the Middlesex County representative teams.
When girls' football was introduced at St Benedict's in 2024, Izzy embraced the opportunity to captain the school's inaugural Girls' First XI. She played a key role in inspiring and encouraging a squad of enthusiastic players, many of whom were new to the game, helping to establish girls' football at the school.
More recently, Izzy has come full circle by returning to Actonians, making the step into senior women's football. From the age of 16, she has featured for both the reserve and first-team squads in the FA Women's National League, continuing her development at an increasingly competitive level ahead of her move to the United States.
Reflecting on her exciting next chapter, Izzy said:
"I have chosen to go to university in America to challenge myself both on and off the football pitch. I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity, and I hope my experience gives others the confidence to follow a similar path."
Head of Football, Daniel Matsuzaka, said:
"It is a fantastic achievement for Izzy to secure a football scholarship in the United States. Throughout her time at St Benedict's, Izzy has been an outstanding ambassador for girls' football and a valued member of our sporting community.
As captain of the 1st XI this season, she has led by example, delivering a number of exceptional performances and contributing an impressive tally of goals. Her commitment, leadership and passion for the game have made a significant impact both on and off the pitch.
We are incredibly proud of all that Izzy has achieved and look forward to following her journey as she embarks on this exciting new chapter. We wish her every success for the future."
Director of Sport, Zoran Higgins, added:
“Izzy's achievement reflects her commitment, enthusiasm and willingness to embrace opportunities in sport. At St Benedict's, we encourage pupils to engage in a broad range of activities, with many students benefiting from participation across football, rugby, golf, hockey, athletics and tennis as they develop their skills, confidence and enjoyment of sport.
We hope Izzy's experience encourages others to make the most of the opportunities available, both within and beyond our sporting programme, and we wish her every success as she embarks on this exciting new chapter in the USA.”
