A place in the final of the Historical Association's Great Debate
St Benedict's sixth form student Matthew Rock is through to the final of the Historical Association's Great Debate, following his powerful speech about Napoleon.
Sixth form student Matthew Rock (Lower 6th) has won the first heat of The Great Debate, which is organised by the Historical Association. On Thursday 31st January, he gave a five minute speech in answer to the question: “What was the Greatest Failure of the Age of Revolutions (1775-1848)?” Matthew’s somewhat controversial argument was that Napoleon was the greatest failure.
Matthew gave his speech in front of two judges in the Council Room of the Royal Historical Society. Head of History, Mrs Nicholls, said: "He performed incredibly well, explaining his points calmly, and gaining particular praise for his well-structured line of argument and comparison against other notable figures who have failed in history. Matthew was able to impress the judges, earning himself a place at the final in March which takes place at Windsor Castle. Matthew’s success is a huge achievement, and we look forward to the final!"
