Sporting excellence is achievable for all By offering a wide sporting choice our aim is to create a challenging and rewarding environment that matches and stimulates the needs and desires of all our pupils. We promote the highest sporting aspirations. This is achieved by providing the time, the best facilities and equipment, expert coaching and a highly competitive internal and external annual fixture programme including our overseas sporting tours. The Sporting day kicks off very early in the school's modern and fully equipped Gymnasium which is now complete with a new fitness suite. It is a very busy and highly active centre within the school complex and opens each morning at 7:45am with activities starting almost immediately, whether it's Basketball or Badminton Club, extra Netball, Rugby or Cricket training or extra practical work for GCSE students. The new Aerobic and Weight training suite is always a busy and productive area. During lunchtimes and again after School the Gym is a highly used resource in the school's busy day. There are additional clubs including Fencing, Dance, Karate and Keep fit with teams partaking in extra coaching sessions in preparation for weekend sporting fixtures. On Saturdays and during the week the school can play as many as 30 fixtures in numerous sports against other schools, both local and further afield. Regular swimming training also takes place for our swimming squads in three local swimming pools. Playing competitive sport against other schools is a key area of life at St. Benedict's and one for which the school is probably best known. The fixture list has grown in all the major sports with other new sporting introductions catching up fast. Netball and Fencing are two sports that have made significant progress in the last few years. Netball fixtures are now well-established and wins have been recorded over a number of other rival schools. Fencing is going from strength to strength with the introduction of epee in addition to the foil, which has provided so much success in competitions and inter-school matches. The School is now represented in the top twenty on the individual results scoreboards of the Public Schools Championships. Rugby has enjoyed particular national and international success in recent years with numerous capped schoolboy internationals as well as success in winning the Daily Mail National Cup at Twickenham in 2005, losing a close semi-final in 2007 and once again reaching the final in 2008. St Benedict's also won the highly coveted Rugby World Team of the Year award in 2008 and represented England at the World School's Cup in Japan. The School is closely linked to London Wasps where currently three former pupils are playing under professional contracts with numerous others in line waiting for the opportunity. We are looking to add to our current impressive facilities with a full size Astroturf pitch for Hockey, along with numerous other activities. Please click here for current fixtures and results.
