Drama (Senior)

Drama is a popular subject at St Benedict’s and the results are high with many students going on to further their drama studies at University or Drama School.

The drama department is fortunate in having both a large Studio space and a small purpose built Theatre which both have programmable lighting systems.

Emphasis in drama is placed on class and workshop activities throughout the school. Pupils in the Lower and Upper 5th (Years 10 and 11) can opt to study Drama GCSE as part of their curriculum and have the opportunity to further develop their skills by opting for Drama and Theatre Studies at both A/Sand A2 Level. Pupils have the opportunity to perform productions of both scripted and their own devised work on a regular basis and many find performing in front of a live audience to be a very rewarding experience. Some of our past A level productions have included:- Metamorphosis, Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf, A Winter’s Tale, Measure for Measure, Entertaining Mr Sloane, Othello, Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Amadeus, On the Ledge, Death and the Maiden, Road, Roberto Zucco, Two, Joe Egg and The rise and fall of little voice to name but a few.

Theatre trips are arranged regularly to see productions of contrasting genres as an integral part of their studies. Study days at the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden are now a regular event for both GCSE and A level students, where texts we are studying are brought to life through practical workshops.

The importance and rewards of drama are immense at every level of ability. Drama gives pupils a sense of self-worth, an ability to interact with others around them, social, personal and life skills and, perhaps most importantly, the confidence to believe in themselves.
