The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme provides a balanced, non-competitive experience for self-development in a number of areas including community service, learning a new skill, physical recreation and the popular hiking and camping expeditions. The focus is on enjoyment, responsibility, and trying out new things. Recent expeditions have included trips to the Chilterns, the white horses of Wessex and the Lake District. The students learn to take responsibility for their own planning, map reading and camping. They often develop great cooking skills in the process! The award operates from Bronze, begun in Lower 5th (Year 10) to Gold, completed in the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13). Each level is more challenging and demands more responsibility and initiative from the students. In their review students usually comment on the independence, satisfaction and co-operative skills they have gained. |
