The School operates over 70 clubs and societies, the aim being not only to cater for the students' diverse range of existing talents and interests, but also to stimulate new areas of curiosity. Clubs for Basketball, Karate, Badminton, Volleyball and Fencing produce excellence outside the School's major sports; debaters, public speakers and chess players compete in national competitions; budding young scientists make chemical ice cream, while the linguists immerse themselves in Arabic and Hawaiian; the high quality of classical music making is backed up by the carnival atmosphere of the Jazz Band and Big Band. The School SVP is one of the largest in the country and involves students of all ages, raising awareness of and helping those in need. Students in Year 9 can join the Combined Cadet Force and in Year 10 the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, both of which offer outward-bound opportunities, while numerous subject clubs provide interesting activities during lunchtimes. Drama has regular workshops leading to the LAMDA awards and puts on at least two major productions each year. There is a clear and proven correlation between participation in this vast array of activities and academic success. Our aim is that every student should become involved in at least one co-curricular activity, so that their experience of being at St. Benedict's is extended well beyond the classroom. Eco CouncilThe pupil Eco Council at St Benedict's was launched in September 2009 in an effort to begin to make St Benedict's a sustainable and environmentally friendly School. Representatives from across all year groups help to regularly audit the environmental performance of the School and spearhead campaigns that address the issues that they feel are most important. Pupils have recently begun an anti-litter campaign and are continuing to expand the School's recycling programme. We are also working with the Carbon Trust to try and reduce the School's energy consumption. |
