Classics in a nutshell is the study of the language and culture of the Classical World. Did the film ‘300’ accurately reflect the battle of Thermopylae or ‘Gladiator’ life in the Colosseum? Why has the culture of Greece and Rome so profoundly affected our western civilization? These questions are the essence of why we study Classics. It might be through the medium of the language - how satisfying is it to be able to read the authors in their original language, be it Latin or Greek? But not everything is lost in translation so, through Classical Civilisation, the topics can be studied by non-linguists. Visit the West End theatres to see modern productions of classical plays or the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum. The study of Classics does go well beyond the classroom.
