Modern Foreign Languages (Junior - Academic Curriculum)

Children at St Benedict's Junior School are introduced to French at the age of 7. Lower and Upper Preps enjoy one hour of French per week and Forms One and Two have one and a half hours per week. French lessons are taught in a designated classroom, brightly decorated with colourful linguistic stimuli and equipped with an interactive whiteboard. The curriculum follows the recently proposed QCDA guidelines and is highly imaginative in both delivery and content. The diverse nature of the subject allows the children to learn about healthy living, Greek myths, French fables, impressionist paintings, and the solar system, for example - all in the foreign language. They access animals, their characteristic and habitats through music (Le Carnaval des Animaux), explore national holidays and customs and write recipes. The list is endless.

French magazines and CDs are on offer for the children to extend their learning and enjoyment of the language at home and, in Year 5 (Form One), the children spend a week in Normandy visiting local sites and learning about French culture.
