Record Breaking GCSE Results

The results this year are the best in the School’s history and this with the largestcohort on roll. For the first time we had 17 girls (in a year group of 102) taking GCSEs. The average number of passes per pupil at Grades A*-C is 9.2. The percentage of passes at A* is 15.6% and the overall percentage of A*/A is 48.7%. These are the highest in the School’s history, beating last year’s previous high! The overall pass rate at A*-C is 93.1%.

35 pupils achieved 7 or more A grades including 13 who achieved 5 or more A* grades. The top performances were by Christina Haddad with 10A*, 3 grade As and a B in Additional Maths, Anthony Rayner 10A*, 1 A grade and an A in Additional Maths, Christopher Dean 9A*, 2 grade As and an A in Additional Maths, George de Cintra 8A*, 2 As and 1B grade, Christopher Whelan 7A*, 4As and a B in Additional Maths, Joseph Levy 7 A* and 4 As and Laurent Altmeyer, 7 A*, 2 As and a B. The average point score per pupil (based on A*- 8, A -7, B- 6, C- 5, etc) is 63.1 – another record!

Excellent A Level Results

Upper Sixth students were celebrating their GCE A2 results on Thursday 19th August. There was a 100% pass rate at grade A – E and, most significantly, a pass rate at A*/B of 70.3% – this is the third year in a row we have exceeded 70%.

This is the first year that A* star grades have been awarded at A2. To achieve these grades students have to exceed an average of over 90% in their A2 modules (in addition to having an A at AS). 9.5% of the passes were at these highest of grades – an excellent achievement.

There were many excellent performances with eighteen (24%) students achieving a minimum of 3 A*- A grades. Top performers included Palash Joshi with four A* and a Merit in the Advanced Extension Award. Palash will read Physics at Imperial College. Richard de Cintra, with three A*s and 1 A, will read Economics at Warwick and Walid Haddad, with two A* and one A, will read History at St Hugh’s, Oxford. Head Boy Oran Doyle gained 2A*s and an A and is applying to Oxford for 2011 entry. Oran is taking a Gap Year and will work in St Benedict’s Music Department. Paul Whelan (Geography at St Edmund’s Hall) and Jacob Gracie- Burrow (English at Worcester) both had their Oxford places confirmed.

There were 11 girls in this cohort and for the third year running they outperformed the boys with over 80% A*/B grades. Emma Beaumont led the way with 1 A* and 2 A grades. Emma will read Drama and Theatre Studies at Leeds.

CCF Summer Camp

In July, the CCF headed off to Tywyn in West Wales for our annual Summer Camp under the inspirational leadership of Captains Finch and Grant. We were introduced to an exciting range of activities, including bodyboarding, canoeing, climbing, mountain biking and survival training in the Snowdonia National Park. An edge was added to each day’s events by the thought that the evening meal was to be organised and cooked by the cadets themselves. The highlight here was probably Section 4’s sausage and mash, though the other three Sections will dispute this.

The soggy Welsh weather held good for all activities and we returned to camp at the end of each day tired but happy, ready for our meal and games of football and cricket, ably organised by Captain Grant. The World Cup Final was watched in the back room of a local hostelry. All cadets really enjoyed their time in Wales and thanks are due to all staff involved, including Mr Sama from Cardinal Wiseman School who brought along three of his cadets. We now look forward to next year’s camp, which will have a more military focus.

Lego and K’nex Club

The Lego and K’nex Club organised by Mrs Gorard has been meeting throughout the year at lunchtimes. Children have the opportunity to challenge convention, structure, balance and coordination through the creation of amazing structures.

At the end of the Summer Term Sean Keeley and Michael Lawless made this intricate model of Ealing Abbey – a lovely way of celebrating the end of the school year and won the club prize for this term. Many thanks to parents who have donated Lego and K’nex to the club which no doubt will continue to be enjoyed by many children.

Absolutely! You are going round the bend! Bonkers! Crackers! Loopy! You are certifiably crazy!

But I’ll let you in on a little secret…all the best people are mad!

You would have to be mad, not to have been blown away by the amazing talents of the Form Two children, who performed to a spellbound audience in the Orchard Hall on Tuesday 6th July. It was time for St Benedict’s very own version of Alice in Wonderland.

Pre-Preps visit Wetlands Centre

Under 13 XI in Cricket Final

Evidence of the renaissance in cricket at St Benedict’s School is apparent in that for the second year running, the Under 13 cricket team reached the final of the Schools Association of Middlesex Cup (SCAM Cup). The game was a 30 over match against Enfield Grammar School, played on Thursday the 8th of July at Old Actonians cricket ground.

This was an excellent evening of musical entertainment from our Middle School and Lower Fifth pupils. There was a varied programme which included performances from soloists, duos, small ensembles, the Girls’ Choir and the newly formed Jazz Band. Well done to all involved!
